Working in a nursery involves growing plants, selling plants or both. While knowledge of plants is a given, there are many other skills that can make the difference between success and failure both for the worker, and for the nursery.

Courses Direct has several options for learning about plants in a nursery setting from a simple 100 hour Statement of Achievement suitable for growers, sales assistants and wholesale nursery managers, through to a 2400 hour Advanced Diploma in Horticulture with an emphasis on Nursery Management, with a couple of Certificates in between. All courses can be taken anywhere, anytime and they are taught by qualified experts in the field. All of them include basic horticulture and best industry practices, while the course for sales assistants covers a lot of the skills that are needed to make sales such as effective communication. This course also conveys knowledge about the care of plants, identification of plant health problems with appropriate suggestions for remedies both organic and chemical, and it talks about the importance of display â€" how plants are placed makes a big difference to the first impression customers get.

Courses for nursery hands and growers cover a lot of plant identification, soils and nutrition, potting soils, and plant propagation which is particularly important for preserving endangered native species such as some of Western Australiaâ€ös wattles or Tasmaniaâ€ös orchids.
