This popular phonics course will train you to tutor children or adults in basic spelling and reading. You will learn about phonics - the relationship between letters and sounds - and how the brain learns. You will discover how to diagnose spelling and reading problems, how to help people overcome their literacy problems and how to help beginners get a good start.
Phonics is the basis of English spelling and reading – we read by decoding words from print into sounds; to spell, we reverse the process and encode sounds into letters. Modern phonics is again - after a 40-year break - a mandatory part of literacy studies in most English-speaking countries.
A unique feature of this course is that it provides a systematic way of dealing with English spelling, using knowledge of the three main source languages of English, from the Anglo-Saxons, from French and from Latin and Greek.
As a trained tutor you will use active learning, seeing, saying, hearing and writing, so your students will be fully engaged and will learn quickly, both information and skills.
Parents and grandparents, teachers and teacher aides, people from a non-English speaking background will gain more information and skill from this course than most teacher trainees get in their degree. Your own spelling will most likely improve, as well as your reading and pronunciation, as you become more aware of the phonics basis of written English.
This is a practical course, non-academic in its approach and methods, that provides training, skills and experience, with a minimum of theoretical background.
Any person, from late teens to mature age, with a few years of secondary education, who has an interest in tutoring those with reading and spelling difficulties, or in introducing young children to reading and writing, would enjoy and benefit from this course.
